2012 European Athletics Championships

Piñata teamed up with photographing agency Kuvaamo to create these images for the 2012 European Athletics Championships, held in Helsinki. Jyrki Reinikka of Kapina thought it was time to lift up our primitive instincts and fighting spirit and get some true war paint and piercings on!

Piñata designed the war paint for Tero Pitkämäki and Olli-Pekka Karjalainen after carefully studying the look of different tribes and warriors. "We explored a lot of different approaches for both atheletes. It had to be a careful balance between the athlete being recognizable and the war paint looking realistic.", Piñata artist Antti says, and continues: "A lot of the primitive and most intimidating war paints we found were covering the whole face and paint had been used heavily. You can't see much of the person really." Finally, a symmetric and simple design was selected for both guys.

Mr. O-P.

Marko Rantala of Kuvaamo photographed the athletes and Piñata retouched and created the paint on each athlete afterwards. This way it was easier to explore different approaches and have control over the whole image. "We are always happy to collaborate with professional talents and get their vision and input on the project. Marko did a great job here giving his thoughts on lighting and setup." Antti says.

In the end the careful planning and sketching paid off, and the project went on smoothly after the right look was found for both athletes.
