Summer is definitely the hot season when it comes to selling ice cream, but with this cuddly character, we had to tune our minds for much colder atmosphere.
Jukka Mannio of DDB teamed up with Piñata to create a new character, a mascot for Ingman ice creams. After the brief Mikko started sketching out several versions, variating the overall silhouette, head and expressions of the bear, coming up with different kind of moods and attitudes for the character.
While Mikko was busy sketching the polar bear according to Jukka's brief, Turkka did some preliminary testing with different tools to produce fur in 3D: "Creating good-looking and lively fur poses always a challenge and in this case we really needed to focus on the right kind of look. "
"Even though creating a character in 3d gets technically quite complex at times - it's important to keep your focus on the overall picture. What kind of character are we creating, what's he doing etc... Focus on the right things! Here Mikko's sketches and Jukka's brief really helped a lot.", says Turkka.
With the design ready and modeled, lighting was set up to emphasize the cartoony appearance of the bear. After that Tuomas added the finishing touches to the style, fine-tuned color palette and added small details here and there.
