Finnair Parasol
October 30th, 2009

The parasol was a follow-up to the simplistic series of ads created for Finnair by art director Ritva Isteri of SEK & Grey. It combines the idea of a staright flight route with the asian theme of sun and Japanese sumi-e ink and wash painting.

"This was one of those projects that surprise you with all the things you get to do and how many different elements finally form the final picture.", says Tuomas Korpi. Jerry Ylilammi started by building the basic parasol and the materials in 3D. Later Tuomas continued the 3D work by adjusting the camera angle, lighting and rendering. "The initial idea was to build the picture mostly in compositing but I thought the simple elements I needed from 3D were easier to create myself this time.", Tuomas says. "Turkka Kylliäinen actually pitched in at the end creating a couple of passes that really made the parasol and its materials."

After Tuomas had the needed raw material from 3D he naturally had to master the ancient techique of sumi-e in a matter of hours. "Luckily I was able to use Photoshop to compensate for the flaws in my technique.", Tuomas laughs. "I spent an evening at the studio with a bottle of ink and big pieces of paper laid out on the conference room table. I just splashed all kinds of flowers, weeds and reeds on the paper and then built the decoration on the parasol combining the best parts of my paintings."

"At the beginning the intended style of the painting was quite massive but luckily we managed to go towards a more delicate and at the same time more Japanese look.", Tuomas says. "The colours were at the same time simplified and now the combination works so much better than the original."
