"When we got this assignment from King, at first I was really fascinated by recent Marvel comic book covers made by Marko Djurdjevic.", says Tuomas Korpi. "But after we went through different options with the creatives we decided to go with a more retro-look with a heavier outline."

"Tuomas and Mikko Vormala studied different poses and expressions for the dad before deciding with the strong assertiveness. Mikko then continued drawing the anatomy studying old Superman covers and bodybuilding pictures. "Getting the shading and hatching right proved a bit tricky with computers, so we once again turned to traditional tools.", says Mikko. "We printed out versions and created a hand-drawn 'shadow pass' for the picture."

Mikko hatching some shadows the good old way.

Once Mikko had finished his part, Tuomas created a quick colour sketch and then started painting the picture. "The final look came together quite quickly on top of Mikko's drawing and shadows.", says Tuomas. "Henri Tani then helped me with the Superman-style typography that I painted over to make it fit the rest of the style seamlessly."
