Our main challenge with this picture was creating a believable banknote illustration in a reasonable time - despite the fact that in the real world it takes ages to design and illustrate. The ad was designed just for one specific use at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, which helped us a lot with the process all the way to the smallest details and line thicknesses.
"The kind of finicky guy that I am, I was really fired up about doing these kind of graphics.", says Tuomas Korpi. "Doing careful details and combining wood and steel engraving styles was a lot of fun for me. I've always been fascinated with artists like Gustave Doré and their work. Forthright pathos and near-Stalinistic epic proportions are always a big plus for me."
Once we found the right tools and methods, the picture pretty much came together in a couple of days. "We pre-generated suitable patterns and textures, combined them with painted elements and stock photography and then simply drew some parts the old fashioned way.", says Mikko Vormala. "With the basic elements ready we focused on adding some classic banknote imagery and making the colours work together. After that, the finishing work was some more drawing to tie everything together."
"This was a fun piece of work to create with a unique style and challenges that come with it.", says Tuomas. "I'm really happy with the way it came out as a collaboration between me and Mikko."
