Sonera Laptops
May 8th, 2009

With most computers made too darn complicated, Sonera launched a selection of ultraportables with everything important pre-installed. Just power up and you're ready to connect to the Internet. Director Untamo Lehto of FLMS contacted Piñata to take charge of animating, post producing and colour grading the film.

One of the key shots was going to be a set extension with a group of live actors on the foreground. Tuomas Korpi designed the factory and Jani Karvonen took up modeling, lighting and animating the scene. Mika Rantala made some rough 3D tests to test camera positions as well as the white space needed for the live shoot.

Making of video

Once we had the parametres down Mika went on to supervise the live shoot on RED 4k at Telakka Studios. The establishing shot camera movement was tracked in 3D to match the scene extension and animated robot trucks. "The idea of creating stop motion animation look to the film had been alive since the beginning.", says Mika. "But it wasn't until the final edit when the creatives decided to use a really strong effect throughout the film."

"You know the 150 frames you prepared? Well, we'll be needing eight of them."

Mika had in fact carefully rotoscoped 150 frames of the live actors for the establishing factory shot camera movement. Once the stop-motion effect was in full effect he found out that eight frames would have done just as well.

Henri Tani took care of colour grading the film as well as compositing the laptops for the main film and tactical ads created simultaneously with the film. "The laptops were not going to be used only in the main film, but some tactical ads and in online advertising, too.", says Henri. "So we designed a practical animation that could be cut and modified to suit all of the purposes."

Freelance 3D-artist Teemu Berglund helped us modeling one of the laptops and Jani took care of the other two as well as animating the whole bunch. Rami Riihijärvi then built the materials and lighting and rendered the lot to suit the desired bright Sonera look.
