The whole point of public transport is not the transport itself, but all the places it can take you. Risto Etelämäki and Janne Piippo of Rientola wanted to communicate the message by building three different locations inside a bus. The three different subjects brought some nice variety into the project and allowed us to use different techniques.
Our initial idea with the forest environment was to build it using stock photography. After hours of browsing through image banks Tuomas Korpi decided to go with a different plan. "Once the lighting conditions were right, I took my digital camera and rambled around the forest at Friisinkallio.", says Tuomas. "Once I got the photographed material to fit the bird watcher the way I wanted, putting it all together was relatively easy. Most of the attention went to building the far end of the forest dense enough and creating the cross sections on the foreground."
Lauri Eriksson photographed the three models in a studio according to the 3D drafts Tuomas and Turkka Kylliäinen had put together prior to the shoot. The lighting at the shoot was designed correctly following the environments avoiding the all-too-usual trap of lighting the usual studio way with no shadows to speak of and thus creating a big problem for the retouch process.
The movie theatre was designed to fit in the space of the bus with the corridors and seats placed accordingly. "First we did some interior design with Turkka and then he created most of the material in 3D with very little work left for the retouch.", says Tuomas. "The photographed material and the renderings fit together very well. We decided to go with the recognizeable red movie theatre interior to make the effect as apparent as possible."
Creating the swimming pool picture pretty much followed the lines of the movie theatre. "We decided to decorate the back wall with a warm wood paneling to avoid the feeling of an operating room.", says Rami Riihijärvi. "Most of the stuff was created in 3D by Turkka and me with basic compositing left for Tuomas."
