It was inspiring to do characters again. I really enjoyed modeling the family and setting up the lighting for the scene."
With the summer fast approaching Art Director Jukka Mannio of DDB wanted to create something lively and uplifting for fast food giant McDonald's. Maybe something apart from the minimalistic line of McDonald's illustrations.
Our approach to the picture was a mix of 3D and retouch, but the pre production was heavily emphasized on finding the right kind of look for the characters. Mikko and Antti teamed up, Mikko focusing on the character design and Antti exploring the overall composition and background.
"The style of the characters were a mixture of simplified realism, 3D and miniature puppets. It certainly needed some exploration to find the look. Luckily a lot of our artists contributed by sending some of their favorite stuff they've seen lately.", says Mikko.
3D artist Timo Hämälainen was responsible of the final look and shading of characters: "It was inspiring to do characters again. I really enjoyed modeling the family and setting up the lighting for the scene. Also creating the miniature style materials was both challenging and interesting."
"This is probably the only production I recall, where the client was like: 'Maybe that guy is a little TOO happy, don't you think?'. We had to tune it down a bit in the end.", Mikko adds.
