Advertising agency Rientola approached Piñata about a campaign for Rakennuslehti. Art Director Jussi Moilanen had an idea for picture of the Parliament House built out of wooden building blocks. He wanted the house to look spontaneously built - like some grown-up had built it not as a piece of art, but just for fun.
We started by experimenting with different camera angles and levels of detail. Jussi didn't want the the form exactly right, but rather like it had been built solely relying on memory. Jerry Ylilammi started by modeling the house out of building blocks. He used a wood shader he's programmed himself to get the right kind of textures on the blocks, and another script for altering the colouring of the blocks. This way we were able to quickly experiment with different amounts of coloured blocks versus wooden blocks.
Besides the overall structure, scale and amount of building blocks used, the bulk of the process consisted of getting the wooden textures, wears and overall colouring right. We tested a few different kinds of paint, some a lot more opaque, before deciding on the level of transparency. We also tried different colours for the background but in the end the client wanted to keep it light and neat.
