Hartwall Classic Gourmet
November 13th, 2008

Hartwall was launching two new Gourmet beers aimed at modern day foodies. Maarit Haavisto of King approached us with an assignment for product shots for the beers. The bottles themselves weren't actually manufactured yet, but we received samples of the etiquettes from the brewery. The half litre glass bottles are actually pretty hard to come by these days, but Producer Johanna Luoto managed to find one after a tour of supermarkets and Alkos and Jerry Ylilammi was able to start modelling the bottle.

After Jerry was finished Rami Riihijärvi took up the task of creating the actual images. "Beverage photos are fun projects to do.", says Rami. "There's hardly ever anything technically challenging in them, so you can put all the effort into lighting and fine-tuning the materials. It's really CGI photography in it's purest form."

Water droplets have pretty much become a household commodity in 3D beverages these days, but in this case the client explicitly wanted the bottles without them. The correct serving temperature of the beers is not as cold as with your regular lagers, and we wanted to delicately express the fact in the product shots too.

"3D is a particularly good tool for creating a series of beverage photos", says Rami. "The second bottle is always fast to produce and even adding new products later on is no problem at all. We never have to take down or build the studio, so the quality of the series always stays in complete control even if it's produced one picture at a time."
